The 2022 Burgundy Vintage Report

Following on from the miserly 2021 harvest the 2022 harvest has been incredibly generous in not only volume but also in quality for the red & white wines from Burgundy.

In my 28 years of travelling to Burgundy I have not tasted a vintage which has left me with such profound feelings of enjoyment, pleasure and admiration for both red and white wines from this hallowed wine producing region of France. The serious producers who thinned their crops in July and August in 2022 have still produced on average around 42 hectolitres per hectare which is an unusual quantity whilst being able to retain such quality and complexity.

The wines have an abundance of fruit and healthy acidity yet wonderful freshness giving outstanding balance and there will be much excitement & enthusiasm for the En Primeur offers which will begin to be released from January 2024.

With the low volumes of wine produced in 2021, especially in the villages of Puligny Montrachet, Chassagne Montrachet and Meursault (which were so hard hit by the sub-zero temperatures on 7th/8th/9th April 2021) prices increased by 15%-20%. Quite a hike however, now that nature has been so generous, the producers have such good volumes of production in 2022 most of the producers with whom we work are pleased to confirm that prices will not increase for this superb vintage.

The International wine market witnessed a market correction for the period June – October 2023 showing a reduction in prices for Burgundian wines of around 10%. Following this drop in prices (and in particular the lack of availability of the white burgundy wines) the International wine market wines has seen renewed trading activity as confidence and stability have been restored.

One last point about the 2022 vintage. The wines are so very appealing and balanced that many buyers will want to drink them in their youth. I would just like to point out that whilst they will undoubtedly be enjoyable in their youth, they also have the subtle acidity to age gracefully (acidity being the backbone of age worthy wines) and so this vintage has appeal from both a drinking and investment perspective i.e. to lie down for drinking pleasure in the next decade and beyond.

Yours vinously
Philip
